Visual reference desk
Chapter-matched gameplay with the exact location, objective, landmark and mistake to avoid.
- OBJECTIVE
- Read the message block, then leave the house and enter Yoshi's Island 1.
- LOOK FOR
- The right-pointing sign and the exit at the edge of the screen.
- DO THIS
- There is no exit to collect inside the house; use it as the route's starting landmark.
- AVOID
- Do not mistake the welcome message for a level objective.
- OBJECTIVE
- Reach the secret exit that opens the route toward Forest Secret Area.
- LOOK FOR
- The forest's tall trunks, Yoshi-friendly enemies and the alternate key route.
- DO THIS
- Carry Yoshi and a Cape Feather so you can control the upper route and reveal the key area safely.
- AVOID
- The normal goal keeps the map loop intact and does not open the completion route.
- OBJECTIVE
- Cross the cave without losing the Cape and continue toward Bowser's front-door route.
- LOOK FOR
- Mega Moles, Chargin' Chucks and low ceilings that limit full-speed flight.
- DO THIS
- Use short cape hops instead of a full launch; the ceiling punishes uncontrolled flight.
- AVOID
- Do not rush the closing walls or sacrifice Yoshi before confirming the safe lane.
Authentic gameplay: captures come from the OldGames emulator when available and are checked against credited editorial references when needed. Every frame is assigned only to the chapter it actually depicts. No AI-generated gameplay artwork or recreated mockups are used.

Yoshi's Island
Learn the movement basics, rescue Yoshi and clear the first castle.
Yellow Switch activated, Yoshi rescued and Iggy defeated.
-
Step 01
Clear Yoshi's Island 1, enter the newly opened Yellow Switch Palace and press the large switch to fill every yellow outline block in Dinosaur Land.
-
Step 02
In Yoshi's Island 2, hit the Yoshi block, free Yoshi and practice eating enemies, spitting shells and using a safe dismount as an extra jump.
-
Step 03
Keep run held before longer gaps in Yoshi's Island 3, but release it when the moving yellow platforms begin to separate.
-
Step 04
In Yoshi's Island 4, use the higher platforms and pipes to stay clear of the Porcupuffer instead of racing through the water.
-
Step 05
At Iggy's Castle, cross the fence room patiently, then stomp Iggy from the raised side of the tilting platform until he slides into the lava.
Yellow Switch activated, Yoshi rescued and Iggy defeated.
Donut Plains
Open the first branching routes and learn how secret exits work.
Green Switch active, Top Secret Area available and Morton defeated.
-
Step 01
Take a Cape Feather from a flashing Super Koopa in Donut Plains 1 and learn to build running speed before launching into cape flight.
-
Step 02
In Donut Plains 2, enter the upside-down green pipe, then use Yoshi, a shell or the cape to reach the key above the Chargin' Chuck room and unlock the Green Switch Palace.
-
Step 03
Press the Green Switch so green outline blocks become solid blocks that frequently contain Cape Feathers.
-
Step 04
Return to Donut Plains 1 and reach the key above the final green-block slope with cape flight or the triangular block route; this opens Donut Secret 1.
-
Step 05
Enter Donut Ghost House with a cape, fly above the first-room ceiling and follow the upper passage to the secret gate that unlocks the reusable Top Secret Area.
-
Step 06
Clear the remaining normal route to Morton's Castle, avoid the falling wall attack and stomp Morton three times.
Green Switch active, Top Secret Area available and Morton defeated.
Vanilla Dome and Butter Bridge
Navigate underground mazes, moving platforms and the red Switch Palace route.
Red Switch active, the Butter Bridge route revealed, Ludwig defeated and the Soda Lake route recorded.
-
Step 01
Take Vanilla Dome 1's normal exit first, then in Vanilla Dome 2 hit the P-Switch and drop through the transformed block floor to the key that opens the Red Switch Palace.
-
Step 02
Activate the Red Switch, return to Vanilla Dome 1 and use the new red blocks or a Yoshi-assisted jump to reach the vine between the yellow pipes and its secret key.
-
Step 03
Clear Vanilla Secret 1 by its normal gate, then finish Vanilla Secret 2, Vanilla Secret 3 and Vanilla Fortress to reveal Butter Bridge.
-
Step 04
For the optional Star Road connection, revisit Vanilla Secret 1 with a cape or the springboard route and reach its upper secret gate.
-
Step 05
On the bridge route, use short controlled landings around saws, moving lifts and Bullet Bills instead of committing to full-speed jumps.
-
Step 06
In Cheese Bridge Area, glide beneath the first Giant Gate with a cape or Yoshi and reach the second gate for Soda Lake; then clear either bridge route and defeat Ludwig.
Red Switch active, the Butter Bridge route revealed, Ludwig defeated and the Soda Lake route recorded.
Forest of Illusion
Solve the looping map by finding keys instead of only normal goals.
Blue Switch activated, Roy defeated and the Forest Fortress Star Road unlocked.
-
Step 01
Take Forest of Illusion 1's key exit to reveal Forest Ghost House, but also clear its normal gate for the exit counter.
-
Step 02
Find Forest of Illusion 2's underwater key to open the Blue Switch Palace, then activate the final color switch.
-
Step 03
Reach Forest of Illusion 3's keyhole instead of its normal gate; this is the route that directly opens Roy's Castle.
-
Step 04
Use Forest of Illusion 4's secret exit to reach Forest Secret Area, then clear Forest Fortress to expose the area's Star Road.
-
Step 05
Treat the Forest Ghost House as an optional exit puzzle: its secret route returns to Forest of Illusion 1 rather than advancing toward Roy.
-
Step 06
Stay on Roy's moving snake platform through the lava room, then stomp Roy three times while avoiding the walls that close inward after each hit.
Blue Switch activated, Roy defeated and the Forest Fortress Star Road unlocked.
Chocolate Island and Valley of Bowser
Handle route-changing levels and finish the main castle sequence.
Wendy, Larry and Bowser defeated, with the Valley Fortress and Star World 5 routes open.
-
Step 01
In Chocolate Island 2, move quickly enough to enter its third area with at least 250 seconds remaining; that variation contains the key to Chocolate Secret.
-
Step 02
In Chocolate Island 3, use a cape or flying Yoshi to cross the wide gap beyond the first Giant Gate and take the second gate to Chocolate Fortress.
-
Step 03
Defeat Wendy, clear the Sunken Ghost Ship and enter the Valley of Bowser with a cape or spare power-up ready.
-
Step 04
At the end of Valley of Bowser 2, ride the first rising sand wall upward, cross above the ceiling and travel left to the key that unlocks Valley Fortress.
-
Step 05
Clear Valley Ghost House's alternate route to reach Larry early, and use Yoshi's tongue through the wall near the end of Valley of Bowser 4 to collect the secret key for Star World 5 and the Front Door.
-
Step 06
Inside Bowser's Castle, select door pairs that match the hazards you handle best; during the final fight, throw the Mechakoopas upward into Bowser's clown car and preserve the healing mushrooms dropped between phases.
Wendy, Larry and Bowser defeated, with the Valley Fortress and Star World 5 routes open.
Star Road, Special World and 96 exits
Complete every alternate goal and the hardest optional stages.
All Star Road links, all eight Special Zone stages and all 96 recorded exits completed.
-
Step 01
Clear both exits in every Star World course: the normal gate counts toward 96, while the key exit is normally what continues the Star World loop.
-
Step 02
In Star World 2, swim beneath the exit pipe and continue carefully along the lower edge to find its key and keyhole.
-
Step 03
Complete the key exits in Star Worlds 1 through 4 to connect all five stars and their overworld warp points.
-
Step 04
In Star World 5, reach the high path with the colored switch blocks, cape flight or the vine route, then use the key exit to open Gnarly in the Special Zone.
-
Step 05
Clear Gnarly, Tubular, Way Cool, Awesome, Groovy, Mondo, Outrageous and Funky in order; finishing all eight changes the overworld palette and several enemy appearances.
-
Step 06
Audit every red level dot, every Ghost House and all five Star World stages for both exits until the file-selection counter shows 96.
All Star Road links, all eight Special Zone stages and all 96 recorded exits completed.
Secrets & field notes
Optional knowledge for safer runs and fuller completion.
Infinite lives in Top Secret Area
Unlock the area above Donut Ghost House, enter with a cape and collect the repeated 1-Up cycle whenever needed.
Blue Yoshi shortcut
A Blue Yoshi can fly while holding any shell, making several Star Road key exits much easier.
Exit counter rule
Some stages contain two exits. The completion number counts exits, not visible level nodes.
Questions players ask
Direct answers to common progression blocks.
How many exits are in Super Mario World?
There are 96 exits. Several stages and Ghost Houses have both a normal and a secret exit.
Do I need every exit to fight Bowser?
No. You can finish the main story with far fewer exits, while Star Road can also create a very short route to Bowser.
Why does Forest of Illusion keep looping?
Normal goals often return to the same route. Find the key and keyhole exits to reveal the real path forward.
